Helping a Child Settle into Kindergarten

Starting Kindergarten changes a child's daily surroundings, relationships and routines at the same time. Preparation can be practical and gentle: talk about a normal school day, practise simple tasks and give your child time to ask questions. Avoid presenting school as a test they must pass to make you happy.

Practise familiar everyday actions

Let your child try opening their bag, recognising their water bottle and asking an adult for help. Use the same short words you expect them to use at school. A pretend school morning at home can reveal small difficulties, such as a lunchbox lid that is too stiff or a bag that is hard to carry.

Prepare together

  • Label belongings clearly using the school's preferred method.
  • Practise putting one item away before starting another activity.
  • Read a simple story about a first school day and discuss the characters.
  • Explain who will collect your child using a consistent description.
  • Ask the teacher what the initial settling routine involves.
  • Share relevant practical information, such as the name your child responds to.

Keep goodbyes predictable

Agree on a brief farewell and follow the school's guidance on arrival. Promising to remain somewhere you cannot stay can make the next morning harder. After school, begin with a small question such as “What did you play with?” instead of asking for a complete account.

Children adjust at different speeds. If a difficulty continues, describe specific observations to the teacher and agree on a shared response. The aim is a dependable partnership between home and school, with small signs of growing comfort recognised along the way.
