A school performance combines several unfamiliar demands: remembering a role, waiting for a cue and being watched by an audience. Preparation is more helpful when it separates these demands into manageable parts. Ask the teacher what the child needs to practise rather than creating an additional performance routine at home.
Begin with the role and the cues
Make sure the child understands when to begin, where to stand and whom to watch for instructions. Practise a short section with one familiar listener before adding an audience. If the task includes speaking, aim for clear communication rather than copying another child's style.
Support preparation
- Check the exact words, actions or materials with the school.
- Practise entering, beginning and finishing the role.
- Agree on what to do if a line is forgotten.
- Keep costumes and props simple and consistent with instructions.
- Avoid repeated comparisons with siblings or classmates.
- Ask how adults can support the child on the day.
Respond to the whole experience
Afterwards, ask which part felt easier than expected and which part they would change next time. Mention a specific action, such as waiting for a cue or speaking clearly, rather than offering only a broad judgment about talent. A missed line can become a practical rehearsal question for a future event.
Participation can take different forms, including an ensemble role or work behind the scenes. If your child is reluctant, discuss suitable steps with the teacher. The goal is to help them understand and attempt the task with appropriate support.
