A campus tour is most useful when you look beyond the size of the buildings. Your child will spend ordinary school days here, so observe how spaces, routines and adult interactions support everyday learning. Book the visit in advance and ask which areas can be viewed without interrupting classes.
Follow a typical student's day
Start with arrival, then consider classrooms, breaks, lunch, activities and dismissal. Ask how children move between these stages and which adults supervise them. Look for student work that shows thinking and revision, as well as polished displays. A room labelled “library” or “laboratory” is a starting point for questions about actual use.
What to note during the tour
- Can staff explain how new students learn daily routines?
- Are instructions and learning materials easy for children to understand?
- How do teachers notice when a student needs help?
- When do different classes use shared facilities?
- How are visitor access and student collection managed?
- What opportunities exist for parents to discuss progress?
Compare observations after the visit
Use three columns: what you saw, what staff explained and what still needs clarification. If you saw a science display, record it as a display rather than evidence of weekly laboratory sessions. Ask for the timetable or an explanation of typical usage where appropriate.
Invite your child to describe one comfortable moment and one question. Their response adds useful context, especially about classroom atmosphere. Give each school the same core questions so your comparison reflects your family's priorities rather than the order of the tours.
